UNISON Family Benefits Fair Saturday 10th May 2014
in the Music Hall, Aberdeen

Family FairA fun day enjoyed by all as North East Scotland Branches hold their first Community fair for Members' Benefits Providers

UNISON's first local Family Fair was hailed a success both for those who came in to browse the stalls and enjoy the activities, and for the stall holders who were able to build networks for the future.

The UNISON branches in the North East Scotland joined together on 10th May to hold the first Family Fair to showcase the benefits of being a UNISON member.

Local community groups and charities also had a stall and members and their families were invited to see how much money their membership could save them through the offers, discounts and service provided by UNISON.

Local Organiser, Lyndsey Wallace said, "There was a steady flow of people, both adults and children, who came through the doors. They learned a lot about the money saving benefits of UNISON membership, and the kids had a ball at the fun activities.

"Members found out about the money saving benefits, got legal advice from Thompsons solicitors, eye care advice and discounts from Vision Express, and found out about how to get involved in local charity groups and community events."

Lyndsey added, "It was a really good day for the branches to network with each other and the other services that had a stall on the day. We welcome the connections made on the day, and seeing members save money through their membership.

"Since the event, branches have organised for benefit providers to speak at meetings, and join them on surgeries to encourage members to make the use of the services available to them, and also to get others to join UNISON and receive the benefits.

"Grampian Credit Union, who had a stall, organised with the Aberdeen Universities branch to allow the staff of Robert Gordon University to save with the credit union through their payroll," she said.

"There was also time for the people on the stalls to talk to each other and some good links were made which can only benefit our members in the future."

Lyndsey thanked all those involved in helping to run the event and those who staffed the stalls.

"We will now looked to build from this event to let more and more of our members know what UNISON has to offer them," said Lyndsey.

Come along and find out how UNISON membership benefits you

UNISON is inviting all our members from local Branches to come along to the Benefits Fair to see how much money you can save by being a UNISON member, and see what help is on offer to you through our services – welfare, financial and legal.

Bring your kids along too, as there will be face painting and balloon modelling from Magic Faces.

There are also local charities coming along – so it should be a really good day.

Local Organiser, Lyndsey Wallace said, "There are loads of benefits from being in a trade union, from workplace support to health and safety. Trade unions negotiate behind the scenes for members' pay and terms and conditions and we support a great many individual union members.

"However, UNISON offers much more than that and we wanted to give members a chance to find out about the other services we provide which can give them help outside the workplace and save them money. Bring your friends and family along too.

"Non-members are also welcome to pop in to see what they are missing and hopefully we can persuade them to join."
