UNISON calls for proper consultation before
changes to forensic services
Our colleagues in the Scottish Police Services Authority are seeking
our help to campaign for proper consultation on changes proposed
for forensic services in Scotland.
The Scottish Police Services Authority are proposing changes to
Forensic Services in Scotland. The changes include closure of 2
of the 4 forensic laboratories in Scotland in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
They have not engaged with UNISON on any of these changes. UNISON
believes that these changes will have a detrimental effect on the
provision of Forensic services across Scotland.
On 21 November UNISON met with forensic members, Councillors, MPs,
and MSPs to formally launch the campaign against the closure. UNISON
believes the SPSA “report” contains unsound reasoning and much of
their data is flawed. The report does not address distances to
travel and the transportation of productions, the potential delays
and accuracy of evidence and UNISON does not believe that any savings
will, in fact, be made.
Emma
Phillips, UNISON Regional Organiser, said “Our members are angry
as there has been no proper consultation on this plan and they intend
to build a strong rebuttal to this so-called “report". They
do not believe there will be any savings made nor will there be
any benefit to either the police or the public in moving this vital
service
"UNISON, with cross-party support, will be asking the Scottish
Government to immediately launch a full, open, transparent and meaningful
consultation before reaching any decision on the proposed closure."
