The branch has been devastated by the untimely death of James Mulholland, a steward, activist, branch pensions' champion and friend, who passed away suddenly on Tuesday 31st January 2017, just days before his 50th birthday.

James will have been known to many of our members as an excellent steward, supporting many of you with your employment rights. He was hugely respected and well liked by all who knew him.

James was a great believer in the importance of trade unions and was a committed activist within the branch.

James was also our pensions' champion and UNISON's representative on the North East of Scotland Pensions' Board. His knowledge of the Local Government Pensions' Scheme was second to none.

As well as being knowledgeable, well respected and well liked, James had a keen sense of humour, and was always ready with the wry comment and funny one liner. We all loved James. Branch committees were lighter, more relaxed affairs as a result, though this never detracted from the serious business of the union. The branch is the poorer for his loss but by far the richer for having known and worked with James.

Those of us who met James in the course of our working day in Gordon House will always remember and smile at his favourite phrase. When we asked, "How's it going James?" he would always reply, "What can I say? Another day in paradise!"

James will be very sorely missed in the branch. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time, especially his beloved wife Lorna.

James' funeral service and cremation was held on Saturday 11th February 2017. Donations to the British Heart Foundation were requested in lieu of flowers and the branch has made a donation of £500 in James' memory.

Rest in peace James. You will always be remembered.
