Les Chalmers, Branch Welfare Officer and Retired Members Officer passed away in hospital on Saturday 8th March 2014.

Les had been an activist since the Aberdeenshire Branch's inception and for many years before that in the old Grampian Region Branch. He had been Branch Welfare Officer for many years and has helped countless numbers of members in this role. He was also active in the wider network of Welfare Officers both in Scotland and the UK.

Les was loved by all who knew him for his warmth, friendship, generosity, humour and his hard work within the Branch, and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family and his many colleagues, comrades and dear friends at this time.

Julie Grant, UNISON Welfare, paid the following tribute to Les.

"Everyone at UNISON Welfare was greatly saddened to learn of Les's death.

"Having known such a gem of a person was an absolute pleasure.  His
straightforward and kind ways meant that everyone he helped through his
trade union welfare role went away feeling they'd met someone who really
cared and understood what they were going through. His unselfish
dedication was admired by all of us and he will always be remembered.

"Our hearts go out to Les's family at this difficult time and we will
continue to be there for them as Les was there for us his colleagues
and fellow UNISON members.

"Our heartfelt sympathies."

Les's funeral service and cremation was held on Friday 14th March 2014.

More tributes to follow.
