UNISON condemns Aberdeen City Council plans to slash Pupil Support staff numbers in schools

Aberdeen City Council have announced plans to slash the number of Pupil Support Assistants in City schools. Councillors will make a decision at a budget meeting on Thursday 10th Feb 2011.

Betty Lyon, UNISON Area Organiser said, "This will have a devastating effect on children's education in Aberdeen. The council has not consulted with parents on the effects this will have on their children's education. Parents need to ask them why not."

She called on parents to show how much they value the work of the pupil support assistants by writing to their councillors and urging friends and relatives to do the same. There is a letter on page 2 of the flyer.

Aberdeen City UNISON Branch is also running an e-petition to oppose these plans and is calling on all parents with children in City schools, their friends and their relatives, to sign up to defend classroom support services for children with additional support needs.

Aberdeen City branch members will be at Marks and Spencer on Saturday 29th January from 10.30am – 12 noon to hand out information and you can sign a paper petition there.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact Betty Lyon, on 01224 620624.
