Stars in Our Schools is UNISON’s annual celebration of school support staff. This year’s event took place on Friday 23 November 2018
The branch celebrated the work of these often unseen workers by handing out UNISON Stars in our Schools goodie bags to school support staff in 28 different schools across Aberdeenshire.
At one such event, support staff at MeldrumAcademy were presented with goodie bags by UNISON steward Graham Wilson at a coffee morning held by Head Teacher Mr Andrew Travis who even made the tea.
Mr Travis told staff the school could not run without them and that he appreciates all the hard work they do.
UNISON echoes these sentiments.
Organiser Ann McEvoy said, “This annual UK-wide celebration day is a great opportunity for pupils, parents and teachers to promote the work of their support staff and thank them for their outstanding contribution.
“School support staff are so often the unsung heroes in our schools and play an integral part of the education of young people.
“Their roles are incredibly diverse, from cooks, cleaners and caretakers to family support advisers, examinations staff and school business managers. They play a vital role in every aspect of school life and without them schools could not run.”
Graham added, “Everyone recognises that school support staff have a crucial role in the running of schools.
“It’s only right that we take the time to value them and to thanks them for the work they do.
“They are the Stars in Our Schools!”
