Women’s self organisation – come along to a meeting on 15 July

The branch is looking to re-establish our Women’s Self Organised Group (SOG) and Taiwo Ilori our new Women’s Officer has written out to all women in the branch inviting them to a meeting on Wednesday 15th July at 6:00pm, to be held online via Microsoft Teams.

If you would like to attend or simply learn more, please contact Taiwo by email or phone, and she will send you the meeting link. Email: taiwoilori@aberdeenshireunison.org

Taiwo is employed at Hawkhill Nursing Home in Northeast Scotland and is the Women’s Officer for UNISON Aberdeenshire Branch.

She said, “The meeting is for all women members of the Branch to come together and form a Women’s Self-Organised Group. As Women’s Officer, organising and coordinating this group is one of my core responsibilities, and it offers a valuable opportunity for us to connect, support one another, and ensure our voices are heard collectively rather than individually.”

Taiwo added, “As the saying goes: we are stronger together. I look forward to hearing from you and to building this group with you.”

About Self-Organised Groups

Self-Organised Groups are actively encouraged by UNISON as a means of giving members a structured platform to pursue shared aims within the framework of UNISON’s rules. As a Women’s Self-Organised Group, our purpose would be to:

  • Promote UNISON’s equalities agenda
  • Defend members’ terms and conditions of employment, and by extension, their jobs
  • Build membership density and establish a strong, visible presence in workplaces
  • Make a tangible difference for women members across the Branch

Our Aims

We would meet regularly to share concerns and aspirations, and to establish our own priorities, which would then be put forward to the Branch Committee for approval. The group would also provide a space to support one another, build confidence, encourage wider participation in UNISON activities, and create opportunities for fuller involvement of disadvantaged members.

Benefits of Joining

Through UNISON, the group would have access to a range of benefits, including:

  • Training courses to raise awareness of workplace issues and support members’ personal and professional development
  • Opportunities to share experiences through events and conferences
  • A platform for empowerment, growth, and collective voice
