Equalities and self organisation

To make sure all our members have a voice in the union, UNISON members have set up ‘self-organised groups’ to provide a voice for people who are traditionally under represented.

Jackie Roy is our equalities officer. She can be contacted via the UNISON Resource Centre on 01224 620624.  Read more here

Equalities and Self Organisation

The branch works to highlight all the different equality strands within the branch and the employers and this page will show the work that the branch is doing to promote equalities.

UNISON has groups at national and Scottish level for women, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) members, Black members and disabled members. These groups are designed to be self-organising but also integral to the union’s structures.

The branch has run a Pathways Course to support women to become more active in the branch and in UNISON as a whole.

UNISON also has a young members (now up to age 30) and a retired members section to ensure that the interests of these particular groups of members also have a voice within the organisation.

  • Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month
    00:00
    01/06/2020-01/07/2020

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month (GRTHM) celebrates the diverse ways in which the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities add to the vibrancy of life in the UK and recognises the varied contributions that these communities have made to British Society historically and today.

Since 2008, GRTHM has been celebrated throughout the UK over the month of June. GRTHM shares the history, culture and language of Gypsy, Traveller and Roma communities, as well as other Travelling communities including Showmen and Boaters. Through celebration, education and raising awareness GRTHM helps to tackle prejudices, challenge myths and to raise the voices of Gypsies and Travellers in wider society.

  • World Environment Day
    All day
    05/06/2020

World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year, and is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment

Aberdeenshire branch Green Champion, Steve Gray said, “This is a good day to appreciate that everything we really need like air, water, food and shelter comes from the natural environment.

“So for World Environment Day, when you get a chance, take time to think about the where your air, water, food and the things in your home really come from.”

And Time For Nature has pointed out, “The foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature.

“Yet, these are exceptional times in which nature is sending us a message: To care for ourselves we must care for nature.

“It’s time to wake up. To take notice. To raise our voices. It’s time to build back better for People and Planet.

“This World Environment Day, it’s Time for Nature.”
